Maternal nutrition is critical for the health of both the mother and the developing fetus. Adequate nutrition during pregnancy can influence pregnancy outcomes, including infant birth weight, developmental milestones, and the susceptibility of infants to various diseases (Abubakar et al., 2024). In Katsina State, like many other parts of Nigeria, maternal malnutrition is prevalent due to factors such as poverty, limited access to nutritious foods, and cultural practices that may impact dietary choices (Baba et al., 2023). Malnutrition during pregnancy can lead to complications such as low birth weight, preterm birth, and increased infant morbidity and mortality (Garba et al., 2023).
This study aims to examine the influence of maternal nutrition on infant health outcomes in Katsina State, focusing on the relationship between maternal dietary practices, nutritional status, and infant health indicators such as birth weight, growth patterns, and vulnerability to infections. Understanding this relationship will provide valuable insights into improving maternal and infant health through nutritional interventions.
Despite the known importance of maternal nutrition, many women in Katsina State face barriers to obtaining adequate nutrition during pregnancy. Poor maternal nutrition can lead to adverse birth outcomes and long-term health issues for the infant. This study seeks to explore how maternal nutrition impacts infant health, focusing on the challenges women face in achieving proper nutrition during pregnancy in Katsina State.
This study will focus on pregnant women in Katsina State and the subsequent health outcomes of their infants. Data will be collected from healthcare facilities, nutritionists, and public health surveys. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported dietary information and challenges in tracking long-term infant health outcomes.
